Advisor: Martha Biondi
Andy Baer is a PhD student working under advisor Martha Biondi. His interests are in 20th U.S. History with a specialization in civil rights and criminal justice. Through an examination of police torture in Chicago and the political resistance it inspired, his ongoing dissertation work explores the role of local law enforcement in the age of mass incarceration. Exploring the torture regime under Chicago police Commander Jon Burge, Andy's dissertation is titled "From Law and Order to Torture: Race and Police in Post-Industrial Chicago." Andy has an Associate's degree from Daytona Beach State College, a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Florida, an MA in social science from the University of Chicago and an MA in History from Northwestern.
